BYU Hawaii Runs Past Argos
March 6 – The Notre Dame de Namur men’s basketball team struggled to find their offense in the season finale as they fell to BYU Hawaii 81-55. The Argos shot 40% for the game, but made just 8 of 27 field goals (29%) in the first half.
The Seasiders were the opposite as they connected at 54% in both the first and second to run away with the game. After the Argos scored their first basket to make the score 4-2, BYUH rattled off a 22-4 run to go ahead by twenty. The margin would dip below 20 momentarily before the Seasiders scored twelve unanswered to push their lead to 30.
The Argos offense picked up in the second half, outscoring the visitors 38-37 but the damage was already done. Bennie Murray and Josh Malloy combined for 23 second half points as the Argos hit 48% of their attempts.
Murray led the team with 14 points, knocking down three 3-points while Chris Silzer and Nick Storment also reached double figures with 11 and 10 respectively. Storment also grabbed a game high nine rebounds and blocked three shots.
Rory Patterson poured in a game high 19 to lead the Seasiders while Marques Whippy turned in an excellent all around game with 11 points, seven rebounds, six assists and seven steals.
The Argos finished the season at 4-23 and went 2-14 in PacWest play. BOX SCORE
Argos Fall to Chaminade
March 4 – The Notre Dame de Namur men’s basketball team fought hard but ultimately fell to Chaminade 56-43. The Argos stayed close for much of the first half, but a late Silversword run put the visitors ahead for good.
NDNU came out strong, using a Jeff Berridge 3-pointer and a Trent Henwood lay-up to take an early 5-2 lead. After Chaminade scored the next seven, Berridge and Henwood combined for the next six to give NDNU an 11-9 advantage. However, with the score tied at 16-16, the Silverswords broke the game open with ten straight points over a three minute period.
The Argos trailed by ten at halftime and were able to pull within seven in the second half but were unable to get any closer. NDNU shot 34% for the game while Chaminade connected at a 43% clip. The visitors also held a 35-27 rebounding advantage.
Trent Henwood led the Argos with 13 points while Nick Storment added ten points and six rebounds.
Shane Hanson poured in a game high 16 points, 13 in the first half while Steven Bennett added 15 points and five assists.
The Argos close out the season when they take on BYU Hawaii on Saturday afternoon. Saturday will also be Senior Day as the Argos will honor their four seniors; Chris Silzer, Andre Hayes, Jeff Berridge and Alex Raj. BOX SCORE
Argos Prevail over Academy of Art
February 22 – The Notre Dame de Namur men’s basketball team completed the season sweep of Academy of Art with a 60-50 victory. The Argos did most of their damage in the second half from the charity stripe as they outscored the Urban Knights 28-16 from the line.
NDNU started off hot, taking a commanding 17-5 lead early in the game after a 17-1 run. The Argos continued to keep the double digit distance, leading 26-14 with just over four minutes remaining. However, AAU got their offense going and closed the half on a 13-0 run to go into the break up by a point.
The second half was back and forth for the first several minutes as the two teams were tied seven times and the lead changed hands four times. The Argos blew the game open at the 6:45 mark when Josh Malloy scored nine straight points to put NDNU up 50-41. Over that stretch Malloy made seven free throws and lay-up. After Chris Silzer hit a pair of free throws to put NDNU up by 11, Malloy added another lay-up to cap off the 13 points spurt.
Down the stretch, the Argos continued to make their free throws, hitting their final 22 free throws to keep the Urban Knights at a distance.
Malloy led all players with 17 points, shooting 13 of 13 from the line. Silzer, Trent Henwood and Nick Storment each tacked on ten points while Jeff Berridge grabbed a game high ten rebounds.
The Argos are back in action next Thursday when they take on Chaminade at Walter Gleason Gym. BOX SCORE
Argos Fall to Vulcans
February 7 – The Notre Dame de Namur men’s basketball team closed out their four game Hawaii road trip with a 70-50 loss to Hawaii Hilo. The Argos struggled defensively as the Vulcans connected at a 54% clip in the game.
The first half was close for the first eight minutes when a 6-0 NDNU run tied the game at 12-12. However, the Vulcans got things going after their timeout by scoring the games next nine points. The Argos whittled the margin down to two before heading into the break trailing by seven.
The Vulcans picked up where they left off in the second half, storming out to a 13-3 run and going ahead by 17. UHH shot 56% in the half and made 11 of 12 free throws while extending their lead over 20.
For the game, NDNU shot 38% and made just 11 of 21 free throws.
Chris Silzer scored a game high 16 points while Nick Storment added ten points off the bench.

Argos Nipped by Chaminade
February 3 – The Notre Dame de Namur men’s basketball team nearly pulled off the upset before falling to Chaminde 75-69. The Argos led as late as five minutes remaining before a Silversword run sealed the game.
The first half was back and forth for the first few minutes before a 7-0 NDNU run gave the Argos a 15-7 advantage. With just under seven minutes left the Argos led 21-19 but nine unanswered points by Chaminade gave the home team the lead.
The Argos shot 52% in the first half while the Silverswords hit at a 47% clip to take an eight point lead into the break.
Chaminade built their lead up to ten in the second before a 15-5 run by NDNU gave the Argos a 52-51 advantage. After the two teams swapped baskets, the Silverswords broke the game open with an 11-1 run and never looked back.
For the game, NDNU shot 46% from the field while Chaminade shot 44% but committed just six turnovers.
Chris Silzer scored a career high 18 points on 6 of 8 shooting and hit all three of his 3-point attempts. Nick Storment added 14 points while Joshua Malloy finished with 11.
Steven Bennett poured in a game high 20 points while Matt Cousins tacked on 19 points and nine rebounds.

Argos Struggle in Loss to BYU Hawaii
February 1 – The Notre Dame de Namur men’s basketball team struggled to get going as they fell to reigning PacWest champs BYU Hawaii 92-48. The Argos shot 31% from the field while the Seasiders hit at a 69% clip.
The Argos fell behind early as the Seasiders were on fire from long distance, hitting 9 of 11 in the first half. They were nearly as good on 2-pointers as well, making 10 of 14 and shooting 76% from the field.
The second half was all BYUH as the home team scored 13 of the first 14 points to move their advantage over 30. The Seasiders once again topped 60% from the field, shooting 63% for the second half.
Bennie Murray led the Argos with 15 points while Chris Silzer had a game high four steals.
The Argos are back in action on Wednesday when they travel to Honolulu to take on Chaminade. BOX SCORE
Argos Fall to Dominican
January 29 – The Notre Dame de Namur men’s basketball could not overcome an early second half run as they fell to Dominican 70-59. The Argos committed 19 turnovers while the Penguins had just seven.
The first half was back and forth the entire way as the two teams swapped leads five times. The Argos started off strong, taking an early 11-8 advantage. After Dominican claimed the lead at 18-17, NDNU rebounded with back-to-back buckets to retake a three point lead. The Argos took their biggest lead of the game with just over two minutes left at 28-24 but the Penguins capped off the half with six straight points to lead 30-28 at the break.
Dominican came out strong in the second half, opening the period on a 13-2 run to push their margin into double digits. The lead stayed around ten for much of the half before swelling to 15 with 5:33 left. NDNU scored eight of the next ten points to cut the margin down to eight but that was as close as the Argonauts would come.
NDNU shot 41% from the field while their opponents hit at a 45% clip. The Penguins also held a 25-13 advantage free throw advantage while the Argos held a 35-24 lead on the boards.
Bennie Murray led the Argos with 21 points while Cheynne Lishman also reached double figures with 10.
Austin Bryan scored a game high 28 points for Dominican and added four steals.
The Argos are back in action on Monday when they travel to Hawaii for a four game road trip. BOX SCORE
Argos Stumble Against Grand Canyon
January 16 – The Antelopes shot a scorching 56% from long range as they defeated the Notre Dame de Namur men’s basketball team 72-55. The Argos dropped to 0-4 in PacWest play with the loss while Grand Canyon picked up their first win.
Both teams struggled to find their rhythm in the first half with the game moving into the fifth minute without any points. After a few swapped buckets, the score remained tied at 9-9 before a 12-2 GCU run pushed the visitors ahead. The Argos did their best to remain close but headed into the break down 27-18.
The game was completely different in the second half as each team caught fire from the field. The Antelopes shot a blistering 66% in the half while the Argos were nearly as good at 63%. The big difference in the half was GCU’s shooting from 3-point range as they knocked down 6-9.
Grand Canyon used a 15-2 run in the middle of the second to push the game out of reach as their lead stretched over 20 points.
Bennie Murray scored a team high 13 points and added four assists while Alex Raj and Joshua Malloy tacked on 12 and 10 respectively. Nick Witherill led all players with 16 points off the bench for GCU, including eight straight at one point in the second half.
The Argos and Antelopes square off again next weekend when NDNU travels to Phoenix for the two schools final meeting of the season. BOX SCORE
Dixie Runs Past Argos in Second Half
January 14 – The Notre Dame de Namur men’s basketball team dropped their third straight conference game with an 83-66 defeat by Dixie State. The Red Storm connected on 65% of their shots, including 68% in the first half to earn the victory.
The Argos stared off hot, making their first three shots and taking an 8-2 advantage. The Red Storm answered right back with ten straight points and would never trail again. NDNU kept it close, closing the first half with five straight Bennie Murray points to head to the break down just 36-33.
After the teams swapped baskets for the first few possessions of the second, the Red Storm would rattle off nine straight points to bring their advantage to double digits. The Argos did their best to remain close but Dixie State continued to make their shots and eventually brought their margin to 20.
For the game, the Argos shot 49% and made nine 3-pointers while holding a 9-4 advantage on the offensive glass. The Red Storm controlled the ball well, committing just nine turnovers and hitting 14-17 from the charity stripe.
Bennie Murray scored a game high 18 on 5-9 shooting and added five assists. Cheynne Lishman added a career high 14 on 4-7 shooting from 3-point range.
Four Red Storm reached double figures with Andy Palmer’s 17 leading the way.

Sea Warriors Run Past NDNU
January 9 – The Notre Dame de Namur men’s basketball team could not hold off the high flying Sea Warriors as they dropped to Hawaii Pacific 82-47. The Argos struggled from the field, connecting on just 27% of their shots while their opponents shot 56%.
The Sea Warriors built up a big lead early and never looked back, taking a 26-10 lead in the opening ten minutes. The Argos followed with back-to-back buckets to drop it back to ten but HPU managed to take a 14 point lead into the break.
The second half was all Hawaii Pacific as the visitors used an 18-0 run to push their margin over 30. For the game the Sea Warriors out rebounded the Argos by seven and racked up ten blocks.
Nick Storment led the Argos with 12 points while Trent Henwood and Bennie Murray combined for 21 points and 12 rebounds.
Norman Wells poured in a game high 25 points, including the first ten points while shooting 11-15 from the field. C.J Jackson added 12 points, 14 rebounds and five blocks.

Argos Fall to Hawaii Hilo in Conference Opener
January 7 – The Notre Dame de Namur men’s basketball team struggled to get their offense clicking as they dropped their PacWest opener to Hawaii Hilo 66-51. The Argos shot just 33% from the field including 29% in the first half.
The Argos started fast with six of the first eight points before the Vulcans jumped ahead with a quick seven point spurt. UHH continued to build their lead before a last second 3-pointer by Bryan Ngo gave the visitors a ten point lead at the break.
NDNU failed to connect from 3-point range in the first, missing their nine attempts. UHH on the other hand hit two of three from long distance and shot 43% overall.
The second half was all UHH to start as the Vulcans used an 11-1 run to lead by as many as 21. However, the Argos got hot from long range and were able to cut the lead to nine after back-to-back threes by Jeff Berridge and Josh Malloy. The Vulcans would rebound and push their margin back to double figures and seal the game.
Malloy just missed a career high with 18 points while connecting on four 3-pointers.
Justin Smith did most of the damage for the Vulcans with 24 points on 11-17 shooting while Bryan Ngo added 13 points.

Argos Fall to Somona State
December 15 – The Notre Dame de Namur men’s basketball team could not hold their halftime lead as they fell to Sonoma State 79-67. The Seawolves shot a blistering 74% in the second half and hit all 11 free throws to outscore the Argos 48-34 after the break.
The Argos started off strong, scoring the first four points before Sonoma State rattled off ten unanswered. After the Seawolves extended their lead to 16-10, NDNU scored the next 13 and took a 23-16 advantage. SSU whittled the lead down twice before a Bennie Murray lay-up with five seconds left gave the Argos a 33-31 halftime lead.
Once again, NDNU opened the half with four straight points before a Seawolf run of ten gave the visitors the lead back. This time, Sonoma State would not look back, hitting 17 of 23 second half shots to build their lead to as many as 15.
The Argos shot 48% for the game but made just 16 of 25 from the charity stripe while the Seawolves rebounded from a poor shooting first half to finish at 55%. Sonoma State also went 18-19 from the free-throw line and hit 7 of 14 threes.
Bennie Murray and Nick Storment led the Argonauts in scoring with 19 points apiece. Murray added a team high six rebounds while Andre Hayes and Trent Henwood combined for 14 points.
The Seawolves got 39 points from their bench with Sterling Arterberry leading the way with 19 points. He made 7-8 shots and all five free throws. Steven Pratt and Mike Nelson added 18 and 16 respectively while Chris Weber finished with 14 points and six assists.
The Argos are back in action this weekend when they travel to Humboldt State for the Lumberjacks tournament. BOX SCORE
Argonaut Comeback Falls Short in Loss to CSU Maritime
December 2 – The Notre Dame de Namur men’s basketball team nearly rallied back from a 15 point first half deficit before falling in the final minute to CSU Maritime 69-66.
The Argos struggled defensively in the first half as the Keelhaulers connected on 8-13 threes and shot 52% from the field. Michael Weimer hit four 3-pointers on his way to 17 first half points. CSU Maritime led 24-20 with 6:30 left and extended their lead to 15 at the break with a 16-5 run to close out the half.
The second half was a different story as the Argos chipped away at the visitor’s lead. The Argos shot 68% in the second half to help close the gap but still trailed 64-55 with 3:41 remaining. After a 3-pointer by Josh Malloy, he came up with a steal and fed Bennie Murray who cut the lead to three. NDNU pulled within two with a free-throw but a jumper by Andrew Medeiros with 39 second left pushed the advantage back up to four. Alex Raj’s dunk with 1.9 second left pulled NDNU within one but that was as close as the Argonauts would get.
NDNU had four players in double figures, led by Nick Storment’s 17 points. Murray added 14 with all but one coming in the second half. Andre Hayes and Josh Malloy each set season highs with 11 and 10 points respectively. Each added three steals while Malloy dished out a game high five assists.
Weimer finished with 24 points while Haven Piatt tacked on 14 to pace the Keelhaulers.
The Argonauts are back in action on December 12th when they face San Francisco State on the road. BOX SCORE
Argos Fall to Western Oregon, Dominican Wins Second Straight
November 28 – The second day of the Notre Dame de Namur Thanksgiving Classic saw Dominican win their second game in as many days as well as Western Oregon toppling NDNU in the nightcap.
The Penguins once again used their explosive offense to run past their opponents, winning 74-60 against CSU East Bay. Dominican used a 19-2 run over the end of the first half and beginning of the second to put enough distance between them and the Pioneers. For the game, the Penguins connected on 54% of their shots while limiting CSUEB to 39% from the field and 31 turnovers.
Xander McNally nearly recorded a triple double to lead Dominican, finishing with 11 points, nine assists and nine steals. Mark Lewis led the Penguins with 15 points while Austin Bryan and Killian Larson also reached double figures with 13 and 11 points respectively.
Mark Samuels and Demitrius Owens paced the Pioneers with ten points each. BOX SCORE
The second game featured host Notre Dame de Namur taking on Western Oregon for the second time in as many weeks. Once again, the Wolves prevailed, using a big first half run to storm past the Argos. After NDNU scored five of the first seven points, WOU went on a 31-4 run and never looked back. For the game, the Argos were outshot 51% to 36%, including a 55% to 21% advantage in the first half.
Matt Schmidt scored a game high 19 points to lead the Wolves while Tarance Glenn and Blair Wheadon added 12 apiece.
Bennie Murray led the Argonauts with 16 points and eight rebounds with Nick Storment also reaching double figures with ten points. BOX SCORE

Penguins and Pioneers Prevail on Day 1
November 27 – Cal State East Bay and Dominican were the big winner on Day 1 of the NDNU Thanksgiving Classic as they each won their respective games. CSUEB toppled host Notre Dame de Namur 71-64, with some clutch free throw shooting preserving the victory while the Penguins used a big second half to storm past Western Oregon 83-69.
In the first game, Dominican upset WOU to earn their first Division II victory. The game remained tight throughout the first half with the Penguins taking a 39-36 lead into the break. However, DU scored the first ten points of the second to build their lead to 13 and never look back. The Wolves cut the lead to four with just over six minutes remaining but the Penguins used another run to put the game away.
Austin Bryan scored a game high 21 points while Mark Lewis and Alex Ward tacked on 18 apiece to pace the Penguins. Xander McNally added on 4 points, 8 assists, 5 points and 4 steals. Matt Schmidt led the Wolves with 16 points while Rico Myles added eight points and 18 rebounds. BOX SCORE
The second featured a back-and-forth contest for much of the first half before a big run pushed the Pioneers ahead. The Argos jumped ahead 21-14 after a quick five point spurt before East Bay scored the next nine to take a two point lead. After stretching the lead to five in the with two minutes remaining Bennie Murray closed the half with five points to send the game into halftime tied at 27-27. The second half featured a lot more scoring as the Pioneers connected at a 54% clip while NDNU connected on five 3-pointers and 14 free-throws.
The Pioneers used a ten point run at the beginning of the second half to turn a five point deficit into a five point advantage. From there on out, CSU East Bay never trailed as NDNU tried to chip away but could not catch up after the visitors connected on 11-12 free-throws.
Murray finished the game with a tournament high 24 points on 8-16 shooting. He hit three 3-pointers, grabbed eight rebounds and dished out four assists. Trent Henwood added ten points while Chris Silzer finished with nine. BOX SCORE
The Classic continues tomorrow with CSU East Bay and Dominican meeting at 5:00 pm and Western Oregon and NDNU playing at 7:00 pm.
Argos Topple Pacific Union in Season Opener
November 16 – The Notre Dame de Namur men’s basketball team opened up their 2009-10 season with a 76-69 victory over Pacific Union. The Argos shot lights out from the field, connecting on 55% of their field goal attempts to erase a first half deficit.
The Argos found themselves down early despite hitting over half of their attempts. After NDNU took a 13-12 lead, the Pioneers rattled off a 14-4 run to take their largest lead of the game at 26-17. The Argos cut the Pacific Union lead to three going into halftime.
The Pioneers started hot in the second half, extending the lead to six points with 13:57 remaining. However, NDNU quickly responded with a 13-0 run over the next four minutes to retake the lead and never look back. Pacific Union did their best to stay close but Bennie Murray’s 3-pointer with 2:57 left pushed the NDNU margin to 11.
The Argos shot 59% in the second half, including hitting 5-9 from behind the arc to pull away from the Pioneers.
Murray led NDNU with 19 points and eight rebounds, hitting 8 of 11 from the field and three of five from 3-point range. Nick Storment and Josh Malloy also reached double figures with 12 and 10 points respectively.
Brandon Monty scored a game high 22 points and added six assists for the Pioneers while Kenny Penn, Kameron Barnes and Aren Rennacker also reach double figures.
The Argos are back in action this weekend when they travel to Western Oregon to play a pair of games. BOX SCORE
Murray Named Preseason All-PacWest
October 28 – Notre Dame de Namur sophomore guard Bennie Murray was selected to the Pacific West Preseason All-Conference Team. The Argos were picked to finish seventh in the conference with BYU Hawaii chosen as the front runner.
Murray (Fairfield, CA/Will C. Wood HS) earned All-PacWest Honorable Mention as a freshman last year after leading the Argonauts in scoring with 12.5 points per game and three pointers made with 53. His 1.97 three-pointers made per game ranked seventh in the conference.
Murray was the top freshman scorer in the West Region while finishing 12th in the PacWest in scoring. He reached double figures 21 times and averaged 15.4 points, 5.4 rebounds and 2.5 threes over the final nine games. Murray was also named NDNU Freshman of the year for his efforts and is the youngest player on this season’s preseason squad that features five seniors and a junior.
This marks the third straight year that NDNU has placed a player on the preseason All-Conference team with Dan Bergeron (2008-09) and Ryan Cooper (2007-08) earned the previous accolades.
Lucas Alves was named PacWest Preseason Player of the Year after winning the conference’s top honor last season while BYU Hawaii was the unanimous choice to win the PacWest.
NDNU Men’s Basketball Gives Back to the Community
October 1 – On each of the past two Friday afternoons, the Notre Dame de Namur men’s basketball team travelled down to Milpitas to hold a basketball camp for the 120 6th graders at Pomeroy Elementary School.
The Argonauts players and coaches ran a five hour camp over the two days, leading the students in drills such as dribbling, passing and shooting. The students also ran drills with the NDNU players and received autographs from all of the Argonauts.
