Public Safety
Notre Dame de Namur University seeks to provide a safe and secure living, learning, and working environment for students, staff, faculty, and visitors. Safety will be achieved by enforcing Notre Dame de Namur University policies, procedures, regulations, and local, state, and federal laws.
NDNU’s Public Safety Service provides for the security of persons and facilities on campus. Responsive, comprehensive service is provided in keeping with the core values of the Sisters of Notre Dame de Namur and the Hallmarks of a Notre Dame Learning Community.
Public Safety provides safety and security services. The 50-acre campus and affiliated locations are patrolled by foot and vehicle. The Office of Public Safety office is located in St. Mary’s Hall, Room 111, and has a customer service window in the central lobby.
We maintain a Memorandum of Understanding with the Belmont Police Department and establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with local, state, and federal agencies.
Parking Permits
All staff, faculty, students, and visitors who utilize NDNU parking facilities must display a valid parking permit. See info on Parking Permits and Enforcement.
Power Failure
If the university telephone system fails during a power failure, you can contact Public Safety via any non-campus telephone (public telephone, cell phone) by calling 650-504-0656.
Reporting a student’s behavior or conduct
If you would like to report a student’s behavior or conduct, you may use the form provided via the link below. This report will be sent to the Office of the Provost, which will follow up on it or route it to the appropriate office. For instance, a report concerning a traffic violation will be forwarded to Public Safety, while a report on sexual misconduct will be sent to the Title IX officer.
If you are concerned about a student, you may express this concern using the same form by selecting the pertinent “Student of Concern” boxes. The Office of the Provost will receive these “Students of Concern” reports and route them to appropriate parties for follow-up.
Megan’s Law
Section 290 of the California Penal Code requires people convicted of certain sexual offenses to register with the local law enforcement agency responsible for the jurisdiction in which they reside within five working days of their birthday and within five working days of changing their address. This is a lifetime requirement. Law enforcement cannot dictate where an offender lives as long as the offender registers their residence with the appropriate jurisdiction. (The Complete requirements are listed in Section 290 of the California Penal Code.)
More information can be found online.
Policy for Reporting the Annual Disclosure of Crime Statistics
Notre Dame de Namur University Public Safety prepares this report to comply with the Jeanne Clery Disclosure of Campus Security Policy and Crime Statistics Act. The Office of the Provost prepares this report with Public Safety and the local law enforcement agency, Belmont P.D. Each entity provides updated information on its educational efforts and programs.
Campus crime, arrest, and referral statistics include those reported to NDNU Public Safety, designated campus officials (including but not limited to directors, deans, department heads, advisors to students/student organizations), and local law enforcement agencies. These statistics may also include crimes in private residences or businesses if required by law. California law (11160 of the California Penal Code) requires prompt, mandatory reporting to the local law enforcement agency by health care practitioners when they provide medical services to a person they know or reasonably suspect is suffering from wounds inflicted by a firearm or is the result of assaultive or abusive conduct. Any professional or pastoral counselors employed by NDNU are encouraged to inform their clients of the procedures to report the crime to Public Safety on a voluntary or confidential basis, should they feel it is in the client’s best interest. A policy exists to capture crime statistics anonymously disclosed confidentially during such a session.
Annually, an email notification providing the website to access this report is sent to all enrolled students, staff, and faculty. Copies of the report may also be obtained at the NDNU Public Safety Office in St. Mary’s Hall or by calling 650-508-0656. Prospective employees may obtain a copy from Human Resources in Toso Namur or call 650-508-3645.
