Mozilla CEO and Chairwoman to speak at virtual ceremony on May 8, 2021.
For Immediate Release
BELMONT, Calif. (May 3, 2021) – Notre Dame de Namur University (NDNU) announced that Mitchell Baker, CEO and Chairwoman of Mozilla, will be the commencement speaker for the class of 2020 and the class of 2021 in virtual ceremonies that will be streamed on Saturday, May 8, 2021.
Mitchell Baker co-founded the Mozilla project over twenty years ago to support the open web and ensure it offered opportunities for everyone, not solely commercial interests. Mozilla is the company behind Firefox, a web browser that pioneered the open web. Mozilla’s mission is to ensure that the Internet is open and accessible to all.
“Mitchell’s leadership at Mozilla continually focuses on creating an internet that values human dignity and promotes the creation of collaborative, inclusive communities. As we encourage NDNU graduates to go into the world and make a positive impact, we appreciate that Mitchell is sharing with us how she keeps her core values at the center of her work, and how that influences the positive impact made by Mozilla,” said Gregory White, Ph.D., Vice President for Academic Affairs.
Mitchell has articulated these values in The Mozilla Manifesto and Pledge for a Healthy Internet, promoting the public benefit aspects of the internet and advocating for the importance of connecting technology to its impact on individuals and society. Mitchell has been profiled by TIME Magazine in its global list of “100 Most Influential People”, and she has been honored as a winner of the Anita Borg Institute’s 2009 Women of Vision Award. In 2018, she received a Webby Lifetime Achievement Award.
