NDNU President Carey Addresses Anti-Asian Violence
We speak out against racism and violence, and we recognize the hard work each of us must do to dismantle both subtle racism and structural racism in our society.
For Immediate Release – April 1, 2021
Dear NDNU Community,
We stand in solidarity with the Asian American and Pacific Islander community to speak out against racism, sexism, and misogyny. We grieve with the Asian American and Pacific Islander community over the increase in anti-Asian hate and violence happening in our country and in the Bay Area. The recent killings in Georgia were a wake-up call for many to the increase in anti-Asian hate and violence that has erupted in the past year and to how violence against Asian women, in particular, has often been minimized.
As the trial for former Minneapolis police officer Derek Chauvin has gotten underway this week, we are again reminded of the racism and police violence that targets African Americans, especially African American men. Too often the judicial process has exonerated police officers for egregious acts of violence targeted towards unarmed African American men and women.
NDNU has a rich legacy of educating on behalf of peace and justice in the world. We encourage our students, staff, and faculty to embrace our core values of community and diversity and strive to live them out every day. We speak out against racism and violence, and we recognize the hard work each of us must do to dismantle both subtle racism and structural racism in our society.
