Gifts from Bill Hannon Foundation and from Robert Stewart Odell and Helen Pfeiffer Odell Fund Benefit Student Scholarships at Notre Dame de Namur University
Donations totaling $130,000 go directly to support undergraduates’ education
For Immediate Release (9/26/2019)
Belmont, Calif.—Notre Dame de Namur University has recently received two major donations to support student scholarships. A gift from the Bill Hannon Foundation is providing $100,000 to help undergraduates with educational expenses. Another donation of $30,000, from the Robert Stewart Odell and Helen Pfeiffer Odell Fund, benefits low-income students who are the first in their families to attend a four-year college.
“We are deeply grateful for these donations, which have a huge impact on the lives of individual students,” said President Judith Maxwell Greig. “Without this funding, it’s likely that the students who benefit from these scholarships would not be able to attend our university.”
One of the first to receive a scholarship from these recent gifts is Jason, now a freshman at NDNU: “I come from East Los Angeles. Some people say it’s not a nice neighborhood because there are gangs and crime, but most of the people I know there are hardworking and have goals in life. I’m one of six children. I’m also the first in my family to attend college, and I want to set a good example for my siblings. This scholarship was the final piece of the financial aid puzzle that I needed to be able to study at NDNU. I’ve always loved computers since I was little, and I’d like to work for a company like Apple when I graduate. I’m majoring in computer science at Notre Dame de Namur. It’s a challenging major, but I’m up for the challenge.”
The Bill Hannon Foundation, based in Los Angeles, is a strong supporter of Catholic, undergraduate education. The foundation is part of the legacy of the late Bill Hannon, a Southern California real estate developer whose philanthropic focuses included education and healthcare.
The Robert Stewart Odell and Helen Pfeiffer Odell Fund funds undergraduate scholarships to encourage academic excellence and persistence for Gen-1 students. Their donation provides financial assistance to low-income students, breaking down barriers of access to higher education.
