Belmont, Calif.—The Wiegand Gallery at Notre Dame de Namur University (NDNU) is pleased to present “The Wiegand Gallery and Its Mission: 40 Years of Exhibitions” from March 15–April 20, 2019. A reception will take place on Thursday, March 28, 2019, from 4:00–5:30 p.m. The exhibition is curated by Robert M. Poplack, the Wiegand Gallery’s director. The gallery is located on the NDNU campus at 1500 Ralston Avenue in Belmont, California.
“The Wiegand Gallery and Its Mission: 40 Years of Exhibitions” examines the impact of the gallery with images, photographs, catalogs, ephemera, and art from the past four decades of gallery’s history. The exhibit also includes rarely seen artwork from the gallery’s permanent collection.
For the past 40 years the Wiegand Gallery has carried out its mission to focus attention on the contributions and accomplishments of outstanding artists whose body of work calls for greater recognition. The gallery has also featured exhibitions that revealed unusual or rarely seen work of renowned artists. Many exhibitions at the Wiegand promoted the social justice mission of NDNU.
The Wiegand Gallery supported exhibitions by publishing catalogs to enhance the educational aspects of its exhibition program. These catalogs included essays by important critics, theorists, poets, and writers. The catalogs were instrumental in raising the gallery’s stature to national prominence and adding to the history and scholarship of many artists.

ABOUT THE WIEGAND GALLERY
The Wiegand Gallery is housed at Notre Dame de Namur University (NDNU) in a magnificent 1874 carriage house made of native stone quarried on campus. This exhibit space, now in its fourth decade, with porthole windows and skylights, provides an unusually warm and inviting environment for experiencing art. The gallery focuses attention on the accomplishments of outstanding, under-recognized artists, as well as rarely seen work by renowned artists. The Wiegand Gallery produces exhibitions that broaden our understanding of social, political, and multicultural questions as part of NDNU’s commitment to social justice. www.wiegandgallery.org/
