Academic Program Changes at One of California’s Oldest Universities
Belmont, CA—April 16, 2018
As Notre Dame de Namur University (NDNU) – one of California’s oldest universities – celebrates the 150th anniversary of its charter, the institution announces the elimination of several arts programs that are struggling with low student enrollments, and with the goal to provide greater support for other programs that present the possibility for enrollment growth.
The institution’s four primary areas of excellence are education, psychology, business, and science. Some new areas of focus will include programs to meet demands for professional science, natural science and the biotechnology sector of the region. NDNU has also been recognized as one of the first colleges in the region to open a Virtual & Augmented Reality Learning Center, and received international attention this past year when a socially advanced AI robot completed one of its courses.
The University announces that due to continuing low student enrollment, it will phase out the programs in musical performance, liberal arts evening program, fine arts, and graphic design. Students currently enrolled in the impacted programs will receive advising support and an individual plan with options to complete their degrees.
“The current financial environment for small Catholic universities is far more challenging than ever before and important steps need to be taken for these vital institutions to survive. NDNU is among these institutions and needs to be responsive with changes based on needs and demands so that the University can continue its mission, which is to serve our students,” said Judith Maxwell Greig, NDNU’s President.
