Course Description
Innovations in modern technology are often driven by the efforts of startup companies. These companies are in turn funded and assisted by Venture Capitalists (VCs). In this course, we will learn about the processes of VCs: from fundraising, startup funding and startup board management, to investor returns generated by VC exits. We will also investigate exemplary startups through specific case studies of Artificial Intelligence, Data Science and Drug Discovery companies from idea origination to product launch and beyond. Finally, we will examine the potential changes in the VC industry caused by the emergence of extraordinarily valued AI and Data Science startups known as Unicorns as well the overhang created by recent stock market volatility.

Instructor: David Powell
David is a technology professional whose career has included stints in algorithm design, software development, and product management and marketing at a number of startup and established Silicon Valley companies, including Cisco Systems.
He also has extensive classroom teaching experience at UC Berkeley, UC Berkeley Extension, Diablo Valley College’s Continuing Education program and Berkeley City College.
