Welcome to the Center For Excellence in Teaching & Learning
The Center for Excellence in Teaching and Learning (CETL) supports research-based instruction and student success at Notre Dame De Namur University. Reporting to the Associate Provost, CETL works directly with faculty and campus partners to create a student-centered, future focused, and purpose driven culture of teaching and learning.
Student Centered
We support student-centered teaching by ensuring course design and delivery offers many opportunities for collaboration, problem and inquiry-based instruction and all students can learn from and with one another in community.
Future Focused
Future focused learning is competency and outcomes driven, ensuring that all students have the skills necessary to contribute professionally as advanced practitioners and lifelong learners ready for both current and future challenges.
Purpose Driven
Purpose driven learning is rooted in the NDNU Hallmarks and in our collective commitment to helping students realize their unique ambitions and personal goals. Our students are ambitious change makers driven by a desire to innovate and transform.
Course Design and Development
All faculty can access instructional design support from CETL through their respective Deans. Faculty are paired with a dedicated designer who supports course development start to finish. The design process takes several weeks and is highly collaborative. During the development of new and redesign of existing courses, instructional designers provide the following support:
- Enhance your student-centered teaching strategies in all modalities.
- Support the development of your Canvas course, consistent with the Quality Matters Course Design Rubric for higher education online and blended courses, as well as asynchronous learning best practice.
- Enhance student success using various research-based instructional models like Universal Design for Learning.
- Develop measurable, higher order and enduring learning outcomes to ensure acquisition and transfer of relevant knowledge and skills.
- Ensure evidence and assessment strategies are aligned with course outcomes.
- Ensure student engagement and interaction in learning plans and events consistent with 2023 WSCUC Handbook CFR 2.3 and eCFR::34 CFR Part 600.
- Invite and apply student feedback to improve teaching and learning.
- Explore the use of instructional technologies to enhance teaching efficacy.
Our Team
We are a small team of dedicated educators, instructional designers, and assessment specialists who support innovative teaching through the application of evidence-based best practice in course design. We are available to work with faculty individually and collectively in all modalities to help align instructional strategies and assessments with learning outcomes to ensure an impactful and meaningful educational experience for all students.

Many programs are available to support faculty professional development. CETL partnered with the ASC to create the Student Voices project to provide insights into the student learning experience. The project provides student profiles and innovative teaching strategies to support a variety of student needs.
We are also happy to share exemplary course design to help inspire your teaching. A brief introduction to the program can be accessed here.
For faculty interested in exploring the use of virtual collaboration, we offer training and support in InSpace here.
CETL offers fall and spring workshops on instructional topics of high importance and Canvas tutorials. Recorded workshops can be found here.
We look forward to collaborating with you. Whether we are supporting course design or interacting with you at a CETL event or training we hope to develop a meaningful and productive partnership.
