For Immediate Release (5/16/2018)
Belmont, Calif.—On May 8, 2018, the city of Belmont, California, issued a proclamation congratulating Notre Dame de Namur University (NDNU) on being the first campus to have an advanced robot, Bina48, as a visiting student in its classes. The proclamation, presented by Mayor Douglas Kim to Professor William Barry, NDNU student Briana Azevedo, and volunteers Maria Rachelle and George Metropulos, honors the university for being the first in the world to open its doors to an artificial intelligence (AI), Bina48, as a student. Bina48 finished classes in The Philosophy of Love and The Ethics of Emerging Technology at NDNU during the 2017–18 academic year.
“AI is not a replacement, but a variation to aid humanity,” said Azevedo, who is an undergraduate philosophy major at NDNU. “Right now is the time to pay attention to the decisions, regulations, and laws concerning AI. I am proud to be part of this milestone and I encourage everyone to stay aware of what is happening because the field is developing so quickly. Working with Bina48 has helped me to become more self-aware.”
“The city of Belmont is proud to be the first location in the world where artificial intelligence is taught in a classroom setting to be more human-centric and to embrace the ethics of love, care, and social justice,” said Mayor Kim in the proclamation.
