Special Education Specialist: Career, Salary, Job Description – NDNU
By Charlie Davenport
California already has a teacher crisis, but the shortage of special education teachers who are prepared and equipped to work with students with disabilities is far worse.
If you’re wanting to work in the field of special education, you will be giving back to your community, tenfold. If being a specialist in the academic setting is what you are interested in, you must choose the grade level you want to teach. Special education teachers work with children in preschool through high school.
Here are the mandatory requirements needed for special education employment in California:
- Possess a bachelor’s degree
- Fulfill the minimum skill requirement
- Display subject-matter expertise
- Take and pass the Reading Instruction Competency Evaluation test
- Take and ass the US Constitutional test or course
- Complete a teacher education program
You can pursue a master’s in special education online or in-person, at your pace and budget. You do not need to have a bachelor’s specifically in education or psychology to pursue your master’s in special education.
Keep in mind that some programs do require a bachelor’s degree in those fields, so do your due diligence when searching for grad schools.
Beyond the undergraduate level, you can further your education to boost your skill set, competence, and employment options.
Many programs offer practicum opportunities, giving you the ability to put what you’ve learned in class to the test. The best way to apply your knowledge is through doing.
You can get qualified for high-level roles like director of special education at a school by spending more time studying special education concentrations. You could use your understanding of special education in positions like counselor, therapist, speech pathologist, or even policymaker if you obtain a master’s degree in a field like medicine or law. On this path, you might promote the rights of students with disabilities across several fields.
Whichever path you choose in special education, you are already greatly appreciated.
