Notre Dame de Namur University Alum Chris Kernes Co-creates App for Smartphone Psychotherapy
LARKR brings therapy to underserved populations and communities
For Immediate Release (6/7/2018)
Belmont, Calif.—Notre Dame de Namur University (NDNU) alum Chris Kernes saw a gap in the provision of mental health services and helped to create an app that addresses that need. “Approximately 50 million Americans experience some form of mental illness each year, but nearly 60 percent go untreated,” said Kernes, who graduated from NDNU in 2004 with a master’s in clinical psychology. To seek a solution to this problem, Chris and her husband Shawn Kernes cofounded LARKR, a smartphone app that offers on-demand mental health care in the comfort of your home.
“One group that often falls through the cracks in terms of psychotherapy is teens experiencing anxiety, depression, or substance use,” said Chris Kernes. “Using smartphones, we’re providing therapy to adolescents and other underserved populations.” The LARKR app is also useful in bringing psychotherapy to rural communities where there are fewer mental health professionals, therapy is often stigmatized, and anonymity is difficult.
Kernes credits NDNU with insights she uses in her professional life. “The instructors I studied with taught us that therapy is not primarily about diagnoses, it’s about connecting to people, and motivating them to change,” Kernes remarks. “The university’s emphasis on community service also continues to be an inspiration in my work.”
LARKR donated $50,000 of complimentary therapy for the students and families who experienced the tragic shootings at Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida, in February 2018. “My oldest daughter attended that school for three years,” Kernes recalled. “We owned a home in Parkland and have friends who were in the building when the shootings took place. We hope the therapy helped ease the grief for some of the young people and their families.”
