Notre Dame de Namur University Confers Degrees on 481 Graduates
Commencement speaker Stedman Graham stresses need for self-aware leadership
For Immediate Release (5/4/2019)
Belmont, Calif.—Notre Dame de Namur University (NDNU), the third oldest college in California, celebrated its 167th Commencement ceremony on May 4, 2019, conferring degrees and credentials on 481 graduates. The recipients include 164 master’s degrees, 236 bachelor’s degrees, and 81 teaching credentials. This year’s ceremony featured the first Notre Dame de Namur graduates to earn a master’s degree in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL), an online program. Another first at this year’s Commencement is students receiving a bachelor’s degree in Health Sciences. Graduates also include the first from Notre Dame de Namur’s satellite campus in Tracy, California, to complete a bachelor’s in Human Services, and teaching credentials.
Commencement speaker Stedman Graham, a nationally recognized author, speaker, educator, and entrepreneur, spoke about his concept of Identity Leadership: “When you transform from a follower to a leader, it’s a beautiful thing,” he said. “You take control of your own narrative.” Graham, who also received an honorary doctoral degree, underlined for the graduates the importance of persistence: “You’re not a failure when you fall down, you’re only a failure when you don’t get back up.”
Echoing Stedman Graham’s comments on leadership, President Judith Maxwell Greig urged the graduates: “Reflect on what you learned here and our Hallmarks and how you want to be remembered at the end of your life. … Go out and bring your dignity and goodness to serve the people in your world.”
