University’s Commencement ceremony marks 150th anniversary of charter
For Immediate Release (5/07/2018)
Belmont, Calif.—Notre Dame de Namur University (NDNU), the third oldest college in California, celebrated its Commencement ceremony Saturday, May 5th, conferring degrees and credentials on 551 graduates. The recipients included 213 master’s degrees, 239 bachelor’s degrees, 11 doctoral degrees, and 88 teaching credentials. These included 10 Tracy campus graduates. This year’s ceremony marks the 150th year since the state of California chartered NDNU as the first institution accredited to grant the baccalaureate degree to women.
Carlos Robson, a spoken word poet, delivered the 2018 commencement address. Mr. Robson writes and performs poetry with a focus on peace and social justice, two pillars of the NDNU mission. He seeks to help students find their voices and passion to create change in the world. He spoke about faith influencing actions, and encouraged the graduates, “as you head out into a big scary world, know that you are more prepared to change it than you may realize.
You are the face of change, you are the most connected and aware generation that has thus far involved itself in social change in America. But your contribution has not yet been written. I have faith in you, your parents and family members have faith in you, your professors and your university have faith in you. And we are all waiting to see how you put that faith in action.”
This year’s ceremony also featured the first NDNU graduates to receive their degrees in the new blended Liberal Studies program, which allows students to earn a bachelor’s degree and a credential for teaching in elementary schools in four years.
NDNU President Judith Maxwell Greig urged the graduates: “As you leave Notre Dame, I want you to accept a challenge: we live in a world full of trouble and inequity and injustice and violence. Reflect on what you learned here and our Hallmarks and how you want to be remembered at the end of your life. Go out and bring your dignity and goodness to serve the people in your world.”
