“Judy Grahn has truly been a trailblazer her whole life,” says NDNU English Professor Jacqueline Berger. “Mixing passion and activism, she has devoted herself to women’s advancement. Think #MeToo and draw a direct line back to Judy Grahn and the heroes of second-wave feminism.”
Dr. Grahn was discharged from the United States Air Force at the age of 21 for being openly lesbian, propelling her to the forefront of the movements for women’s and gay rights. In addition to her work as a poet, essayist, and cultural theorist, Dr. Grahn was one of the foremothers of the West Coast lesbian feminist movement. Her most well-known books include A Woman Is Talking to Death; The Work of a Common Woman; and her memoir, A Simple Revolution: The Making of an Activist Poet.
