Loans
The federal government makes it possible for many students to attend college through the Direct Loan Program. These loans are not credit based and funded by the federal government though disbursed by NDNU.
Applying for and Accepting Direct Loans
The federal government requires that you complete both entrance counseling, which teaches you about the Direct Loan process and a master promissory note, which is your promise to repay the loan(s).
Your financial aid award offer from NDNU lists the total amount of loans for which you qualify for the academic year. You will be disbursed the amount of loan indicated by semester unless you inform the NDNU Office of Financial that you would like to cancel or alter the amount of the loan.
Graduate Students
Graduate students typically study on a part-time basis. The important thing to remember is that you must be enrolled in at least half-time status to qualify for Direct Loans. A semester enrollment of at least three credit hours is considered at least half-time enrollment status in a graduate program at NDNU.
Direct Loans originate through the federal government as administrated by the Department of Education. These loans are not credit based and are available to all qualifying students. Direct Unsubsidized loan interest rates, effective July 1, 2022 are 6.54% and there is an origination fee of 1.057%.
Credential Students
Credential seeking students typically study part-time. You will need to enroll in at least six credit hours per semester to qualify for Federal Direct Loans. Whether you are considered a dependent or independent student is determined through the FAFSA completion process.

Undergraduate Students

Direct PLUS Loan
Direct PLUS loans are federal loans that can be used to help pay education expenses. PLUS loans are based on your credit history, carry a fixed rate interest of 7.54%, and require an origination fee of 4.228%. The amount of PLUS loan that you can borrow is determined by the cost of attendance minus other forms of financial aid offered.
Private loans
A private student loan is a financing option that can replace or supplement federal student loans. Interest rates are set by the private financial institution that underwrites the loan and these rates can vary based on a borrower’s credit history.
